Same Place New Mission

Many of us at Peoples have served at the Wayside Soup Kitchen. Further, most have now heard that Wayside has chosen to move their meal service to a variety of smaller community based meal sites and Preble Street is continuing meals at their location. We are continuing to help with the meals there each 5th Wednesday. There have been a variety of concerns and rumors about what this service is like and I would like to answer the concerns and correct the rumors. First, I found the level of security to be quite comparable to the previous management and just as safe. At a recent council meeting, there was mention of an incident where someone was hit with a cinder-block. This is apparently something that happened more than a year ago so is unrelated to the current system and since the new system there has been nothing more serious than verbal altercations. As before, I do not suggest this ministry for younger children.
It is true that they now only do cafeteria style service as was sometimes done with Wayside. Therefore they do need a few less volunteers. The ideal total team runs about 15-20 people. The roles for volunteers are somewhat different than previously, but they are all about serving the clients. My suggestion is to get the list of positions from Tom Nelson and make it clear how you would like to serve from this list. From 4:30pm to 6pm they need help with a variety of food preparation jobs. Then there is work to serve plates, monitor cleanliness of tables and condiments, washing dishes and if there is enough help, serving drinks. Finally there is a lot of cleanup work to do when the meal is over at 7pm. It is still permissible for the team to pray prior to food service, but it may be one of our volunteers that has to initiate it.
I would expect that anyone coming to serve at Preble Street now will find it as satisfying an experience as ever. I also recommend against expecting everything to be the same as before. However, if you are open to serving however is most helpful for the cause, you will be blessed in your experience of serving in love.

In addition, there will be a youth group retreat October 15-16 at the Arrison’s camp in Bridgton. Please join us for games, marshmallows, stories and lots of fun. FMI about any of these events, please contact Pastor Jamie at 799-6814.

Inquirer's Classes Have Begun

We began our Fall inquirer's classes today after worship with three couples along with all of their children ... which also turned out to be a fun play date! It was great learning more about each other, as well as delving into the Peoples Membership Covenant that is based on the vows new members take out of the United Methodist Hymnal and what it means to "belong" to a church family. The group will continue to meet for several more classes as we learn more about history and organization of Peoples, ways to connect and grow in our faith and commitment to serve at Peoples, what is unique about Methodist beliefs, and what is different about Methodism from other Christian denominations. Those who would like to become members will join on Sunday, November 14 so please attend and show your support!  In addition, current members are encouraged to reflect on the vows you have taken, and to renew those vows during worship on November 14. You can view the Peoples UMC Membership Vows here.

Mission Dinner, Great Food! Great Time!

The Peoples annual mission dinner was hosted on September 24 by Martin and Catherine Whittemore, along with the July 2010 Peoples Mission Team who served in Wilmington, Delaware. Martin and Brad stood over two grills creating "make-to-order" Philly Cheese Steaks with options of cheese, grilled onions, peppers and mushrooms. Why cheese steaks? One of the mission trip highlights was a quick tour of Philadelphia which included a visit to Jim's Steaks on South Street!
After a fabulous dinner, the mission team began presenting the trip. Betsy Morrison opened up with a welcome as well as what the team preparation looked like through the year.  Then we heard about the various aspects of the trip from Earle, Isaac, Nathan, Ellen, and Pastor Gwyneth. We even watched a short video clip from the Mt. Joy UMC gospel choir where the team worshiped on the Sunday they arrived.
The team answered questions, and then presented possibilities for a 2011 mission trip which include another trip to Wilmington, and/or to another location such as rural Appalachia or international.
You can view the 2010 Mission Dinner photo album here.
The mission trip display was put together by Amy Wellington and will remain for a few weeks if you were unable to get to the dinner please take a look at the photos, cards from Urban Promise and other materials. If you would like to find out more about the 2011 mission trip, please sign up on the sheets provided on the display table.
We will be be meeting after worship on All Saints Sunday, October 31 and hope you can join us!

More scenes from Peoples Mission Dinner

Submitted by Art Tordoff:
It was a pleasure for us to listen to Peoples folks who had gone on the Mission to Wilmington this past summer on Friday evening, September 24. The Philly Cheese Steaks were delicious as prepared by Martin Whittimore and Brad Morrison. It was also to hear the perspectives of each of the members of the mission team and to hear more about the work of Urban Promise.

Merry Christmas!!

Submitted by Teresa Folley
Christmas? Yes, Christmas! Sunday School is starting to plan their Christmas unit and annual Christmas Pageant. We need lots of volunteers! We will start our Christmas Around the World unit on October 17th. We will need volunteers to help out with each of the stations either teaching or assisting the teacher with storytelling, art, cooking, and music. While we are teaching this unit we will also be working on preparing for the Christmas Pageant. There are many opportunities to help, including organizing costumes, collecting props, designing and building the set, taking photographs, designing the program, etc. If you would like to help PLEASE JOIN US for our first planning meeting.

Our meeting will be a potluck lunch immediately following coffee fellowship in Ellis Hall on October 3rd. If you can attend, please contact Andy Folley at 749-5702, or email Teresa Folley.

We hope to see you there!!

Generous Pew Bible Donation

A Peoples family has generously donated matching Bibles to fill the pews! These include about 110 New Revised Standard Version Bibles, plus 5 large print Bibles and a case of give-a-way Bibles for visitors and others who would enjoy an easy-to-read translation.  These Bibles were dedicated during worship on September 26 as worshipers read from the Bibles and held them up as Pastor Jamie led a responsive prayer.
This is truly an eternal gift! "The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord endures forever."  1 Peter 1:24-25

Nursery Staff Position

Please pass along the word that Peoples Church is hiring a nursery staff position for during Sunday morning worship. This is a paid position every Sunday September through May. We will begin interviews immediately. Please click here to view the position description.
This is an exciting step for the church to hire one staff position who will be in charge of the nursery and work together to oversee one church volunteer. We will be better prepared for new families with infants needing care, there will be consistency in the nursery which will be a comfort to children and parents alike, more visitors will be attracted to a professionally staffed nursery, and it will be easier to find volunteers for the nursery with a professional staff who has primary responsibility.

Preble Street Soup Kitchen - Help or Pray on Sep 29

Peoples will be serving at the Preble Street Soup Kitchen Wed 9/29 5pm   As many know, management has changed recently and is a different experience. Before volunteering, please contact Tom Nelson to find out more at 799-6321. If you are not comfortable serving at the soup kitchen but would still like to be involved, please come to church at 6pm to be in prayer for those who will be serving and for the ministry there.

Join us for a Mystery Ride, Oct 24

Please plan to join us for Peoples Church Fall Foliage Mystery Ride on Sunday,October 24. Dress warm, pack a picnic lunch, a blanket and/or chairs and meet in Ellis Hall following morning worship. You will be given a set of questions to answer and directions to follow as we make our way to the mystery destination. Prizes will be awarded to those who answer the most questions correctly and arrive in the allotted amount of time. Hope to see you there! This year's event is hosted by Dick Matthews!

Stewardship Sermon Series Oct 17, 24 and 31

Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, saying: “You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us.” - 2 Corinthians 9:11
You may have noticed the last several months there has been a stewardship witness on the last Sunday of the month. This has been an attempt to begin an all-year concept of stewardship rather than just once per year. For the most part, the Finance Committee has sought out folks to witness about the diverse ways we are generous stewards of God’s gifts – how we use our time, how we apply our gifts, how we serve behind the scenes, etc. with an attitude of generosity. In August, for instance, we heard from Barbara Fletcher, how she has used her gifts and experience with children as an elementary school teacher to commit to attending every Sunday during the summer to lead Sunday School, joyfully!
Although the topic of stewardship is certainly greater than money, we cannot be faithful stewards without considering our relationship with money. In other words, if we are good stewards of our time but not our money, we are not being generous stewards of all of God’s gifts! We will be focusing on the topic of generosity in October, and Finance has some wonderful surprises in store for us.
One of these surprises that we'll share ahead of time is that we are receiving a stewardship devotional from Upper Room! This will be a 21 day devotion to use during the stewardship series. In addition, we will be encouraging everyone to find one generous act to do EVERY DAY between Oct 17-31! If you have ideas you would like to share, please contact anyone on the Finance Committee:  Kathy Brann, Sue Angell, Chris Bowker, Keith Snoddy or Pastor Gwyneth.
Please plan on joining us in the last three weeks of October as we learn to practice Generous Giving through God’s Grace. Consecration Sunday on All Saints Sunday, October 31 will be a wonderful opportunity to offer our promised giving for the new year as a resolution to be more generous people, not by our own goodness but completely through God’s grace.

Walk to Emmaus

Walk to Emmaus is a United Methodist 3-day experience intended for spiritual renewal and to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. Pastors Jamie and Gwyneth have been active in the Emmaus community since 1998, and are beginning to sponsor some folks at Peoples as one means to bring a renewal of faith and passion for service in the church.
There are many ways in which Christians can experience this kind of renewal, and Emmaus is not for everyone. However, it is meaningful for most all who attend. In fact, Jamie and Gwyneth both received their call to ministry on a Walk to Emmaus weekend. They would be happy to speak to you about the experience if you would like to know more, or if you would be interested in attending a weekend sometime. They are hosted every Spring and Fall, usually in Alfred, Maine.
What happens on a Walk? Emmaus is a 72-hour short course in Christianity, comprised of fifteen short talks by lay and clergy on the themes of God’s grace, Christian discipleship, and what it means to be “the church.” The course is wrapped in prayer and meditation, special times of worship and daily celebration of Holy Communion.
The pastors will be serving on team as clergy on the upcoming Fall men's and women's walks. Pastor Jamie will be on the Men's Emmaus Walk from September 30-October 3, and Pastor Gwyneth will be on the Women's Emmaus Walk from October 14-17.  They are excited to share more with anyone who is interested in knowing more! Or you can view the Walk to Emmaus online at http://www.upperroom.org/emmaus/

Women of Faith, Fall Preaching Series

The preaching series on Women of Faith has been a meaningful time reflecting on some characters of the Bible who are often forgotten but are none-the-less an inspiration to women and men alike.  The first week we learned about Rahab the Prostitute from Joshua 2. Brad and Doreen created a meaningful visual for the altar - a large window frame on the Table with a window box of flowers and a red cord hanging out the window. As a sermon response, worshippers were invited to come forward and receive a red string to remind us of God's faithfulness to convert us from victims into victorious Christians as we trust in Christ at all costs.
The second week we heard a Sermon Drama on the Widow of Zarephath, who is not even named, but whose story is recorded in 1 Kings 17.  Visuals included a small cup of flour, jug of oil and basket of sticks on top of a black cloth ... as she was preparing her last meal for herself and her son before she expected to die of starvation. As she obeyed the Lord's call to generosity, serving Elijah the last of her food, she found the Lord's provision of oil and flour to be bottomless! Worshippers were invited forward to be anointed with the bottomless oil for healing, faith, or any other need, and Pastor Gwyneth was assisted in anointing by Lay Leader Tom Nelson.
Don't miss the rest of the sermon series September 26, October 3 and October 10!

More Opportunities to Serve at Peoples!

Please contact either of the pastors at 619-1509 if you’d be willing to take any of these on …

§         The pastors will be leading worship as single parents on Oct 3 and Oct 17. They need someone to supervise their children before, during and after church on these Sundays.

§         The church has a new outdoor banner, which needs to be hung outside on the wall in place of the current banner.

§         One of our nursery staff has brought to our attention that the nursery room needs some attention - some toys have gotten in there that are dangerously small, toys need to be organized, and we need some additional items such as places to lay down babies, etc..

§         A few folks have said they are interested in visitation. Pam Libby is helping to organize the effort, along with Pastor Gwyneth and Jody Fyles. Others are welcome to join the team in different capacities depending on gifts and call (shut-in visitation and/or phone contact, hospital or nursing home visitation, communion to shut-ins, and contacting visitors after worship (phone or short visit). We plan to meet monthly after worship for group support.

§         Our cleaning service does a great job cleaning, but do you think the bathrooms could use some “dressing up?”  According to church growth statistics, women’s bathrooms are important to visitors in whether they return or not!

§         Look around at the church with new eyes. What do you see that the church needs? Would you be willing to take on that project or be part of a group effort?

Monthly Parent’s Group?

If there is interest, we'd like to look into starting up a monthly Parent’s Group after worship. This could be a time to play games and socialize. Or it could be a time to share and discuss topics such as effective discipline, handling sibling rivalry or bullying, teaching our children to pray, helping our children handle grief and loss, etc.. Or it could be a group Bible study of some kind. If you have ideas, or if your family is interested in attending or helping to coordinate, please contact the pastors at 619-1509.

20 and Over Crowd Game Night! Nov 6

Come on out for a fun and exhilarating church game night on Saturday, November 6 at 7pm. How are you at Cribbage? Have you ever played the game invented by Carol's husband called Pegs & Jokers?  Quarkle became a quick favorite on our July 2010 mission trip - come on down and try it! Please feel free to bring your own favorite games too.
Get a babysitter for the kids and treat yourself to a fun evening.  FMI please contact Carol Bruneau at 799-5995.

Celebration of Mission Shares Paid ... and a Challenge

With the assistance of a generous gift of $5,000 from the estate of Richard Nelson, and the reduced expenditures for heat and cleaning which have outweighed the reduced giving this year, Peoples has been able to pay $7,500 in mission shares so far this year! This is approximately 40% of what is due to the New England Conference, compared with 6% total paid for 2009 and 8% for 2008.
The good news is that God has provided us with an unexpected gift this year, enabling the church to pay a much larger percentage of our mission shares than has been possible in recent years with a small church struggling to fund a large building with a full time pastorate and multiple ministries. Thank you God!
However, the bad news is that regular giving is actually down for 2010. Why is this concerning? Because our giving is directly in proportion to our spiritual wellbeing ... if our giving is down, how is it going with our souls? This is a much greater question than whether the church can fund the budget. After all, God doesn't need our money...it is we who need to give because we are made in the image of God whose heart is one of sacrificial love.
We ask you to be in prayerful conversation with your family about your current level of giving, and to consider a significant increase in your giving as an act of faith on Commitment Sunday, October 31.

Wonderful Gifts in Memory of Ruth McLellan

The daughters of Ruth McLellan, a longtime member who served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years, presented a very generous gift to Peoples in her memory. The primary gift was to the Sunday School, including two adjustable height 60" diameter tables, 24 stackable children's chairs in varying sizes, and several rolling carts for teacher supplies.
A much needed portable sound system was also purchased with these funds, and was used for the first time during the mission dinner on 9/24!  In addition, these funds enabled the purchase of a beautiful flowering Hydrangea plant which has been placed in front of the Ellis Hall exterior wall that faces Broadway. A memorial plate with Ruth and Guy's names will be added to the plaque in Ellis Hall.

These items will be dedicated in worship soon, and know that Ruth would be so pleased that her legacy is being used to further the ministries of Peoples UMC, and particularly the children whom she loved so dearly.

Note from Art Tordoff: If you are passing by the Broadway side of Ellis Hall you will find a new and beautiful blue Hydrangea bush that has been planted there. This is a gift from the McLellan family in honor of Ruth McLellan who was a long time member of Peoples who in the past had served as a Sunday school teacher and at one time was the Superintendant of the Sunday school. Doreen, and Marlene of the Peoples Garden Club were responsible for the acquisition of the bush and placing it in this location of honor.

Note from Doreen Gay who has assisted the McLellan Family in making sure their purchases represented both Ruth and Guy McLellan:  Please stop by the Sunday School room and look at the beautiful tables and chairs and take the time to enjoy the beauty of the hydrangea and when you do think of the McLellan family as they grew in God's love and contributed so much to our church family.

Anyone Having Financial Stress?

Then this is the workshop for you. Good $ense, Freed Up Financial Living is a Personal Finance Workshop in which you will learn to honor God in your finances by becoming a: Diligent Learner – Generous Giver – Wise Saver – Cautious Debtor – Prudent Consumer. You will develop a spending plan and learn how to implement this plan through a combination of workbook exercises, DVD clips and discussion with other participants.
If you would like to attend this seminar, please contact the pastors or anyone on Finance Committee for more information. Or if you prefer, the church will also loan out the curriculum to use as a family study. Several Peoples folks have taken this seminar and spoke very highly about it, including Art Tordoff, Chris Ward, Kathy Brann, Rosemary Herd and both pastors who would be happy to discuss their experience. You can also find out more about the seminar contents online at http://goodsenseministry.com/freedup/

Mission Dinner Friday September 24

The focus and theme of this year’s mission dinner will be our Wilmington Mission Team which will take place September 24 at 6pm with Philly cheese steaks as the main entrée (a highlight for our team!) followed by a presentation from the team and more information on future mission opportunities. There will be vegetarian options as well. Suggested donation for the dinner is $5/person and 100% of donations will go toward the 2011 mission trip. If you are unable to attend the dinner, please consider donating a food item. For questions or to volunteer your help with the dinner, please contact Martin Whittemore at 699-4168 who is heading up this event.

Church Auction Oct 22

Submitted by Doreen Gay
Our annual fundraising auction of the church is on Friday, October 22nd. The viewing begins at 6:00 along with "good eats" and the live auction begins at 7:00. It is my job to coordinate all the workers needed to serve the hotdogs, chili, desserts, and drinks; as well as the runners and cashiers who assist our wonderful professional auctioneer Harold Sutherland. I also must collect and organize approximately 100 items needed in order for the auction to be a success. The church budget relies on this fundraiser and we have been very blessed with successful ones in years past.
Time is getting short and I need to step up the pace on contacting everyone to see what you might be able to do to help this year. So please prayerfully consider these areas...
1. Plan to attend and bring a friend, an auction can't be successful without bidders! Not to mention it is so much FUN, ask anyone who has gone before! Mark your calendar!
2. Donate a contemporary or antique, new or used item. Just call me if you need to know what is appropriate for our auction. Donate money to purchase hotdogs, chili, chips, and drinks! Bake a dessert or candy to be auctioned. I can customize for you a Gift Certificates for Services such as: Housecleaning, Handyman, Instrumental or Vocal Music Lessons, Lawn Maintenance and/or Snow Shoveling, Babysitting, Computer Training, Automobile Repair, A pie a week for a Month, Tailoring, as examples. A Weekend getaway at a Cottage/Timeshare/Ski Lodge, etc
3. Contact an area business for a gift certificate for merchandise or service. Please let me know whom you will approach so we don't have them more than once. Here's some ideas...a restaurant, gasoline, heating oil, theater tickets, tickets to an athletic event, haircut, flowers, movie rentals, office supplies, etc.
Thank you so much for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Please note, I must receive all donations by 10/18/10 for printing of the program.

God Bless,

New Dossal Cloth in the Church

What is a "dossal cloth" you might ask? Most of us never knew the name for it before now, but it is the cloth hanging behind the cross above the altar table, which accentuates the cross. The previous one was getting worn so a whole group of people worked together to purchase new fabric, sew, treat, and hang. The cloth was dedicated during worship on 9/19. The Doughty's also put together a beautiful flower arrangement for the Table that day!  Many thanks to Dan and Ruth Doughty, Barbara and Tom Nelson, Sharon Obie, and Chuck Kamilewicz for spearheading this project!

Super September Supper!

Submitted by Sue Angell

I want to thank each and every one of you that brought food to supper and worked serving. Our very first supper of the new bean season was a full house. Just like the loaves and fishes, somehow there was enough food to satisfy every one. Tasty casseroles, wonderful pies and beans too. The fellows and Barbara who ran the kitchen were super great. Everyone that served was special and had fun too and that is a blessing. Hanging out with good people is worth it's own weight in gold.
This is a special monthly fund raiser that earns a goodly sum toward our church budget and it is so important when you all come forth with your support. Chris Bowker, our Treasurer, reported to the Council that Peoples people faithful stewardship is a treasure.
Thank you again.

More scenes from the Carnival

Peoples Carnival and Fair 2010

A great day was had by all. The weather was fantastic and loads of young folks and children came out for games, food and especially pony rides. Some of the scenes that I saw show how the crowd was varied and engaged.

School Supplies Mission

Ellen Dunn, afire from the mission trip to Delaware, during which one of the projects was organizing donated school supplies, came up with the idea that we should help the Root Cellar by providing school supplies. From August through mid-September, many boxes of supplies were collected - three ring binders, pencils and pens, pencil sharpeners, paper, highlighter pens ... you name it, we collected it! Many thanks to Ellen and Carol for putting together this mission, and to the Root Cellar for giving out all of these supplies to those who are most in need.
