Peoples UMC Men In Action

Peoples UMC Men In Action

Since September of 2015 the Peoples United Methodist Men have been reactivated and have planned and are carrying out a number of activities. The merger between the above named organization and another group of men who had met on the second Saturday of every month from September through June for breakfast has been the impetus for much of the restored activity of men at Peoples. A cast of leaders serving as President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer also includes a Spiritual Leader, Social leader, Communications director and a Works director was created and seems to be providing leadership that lay dormant for a number of years. For a number of years the certification of Peoples UMC was paid for by UMW. This is the first year in many that the men have taken the responsibility to pay national dues. On behalf of the UMM, we thank the women for carrying the “bill” for a number of years.

During the months that have followed, 13 to 17 men have participated in the breakfast while many have taken part in the other activities that UMM has been sponsoring. UMM in its work efforts has been supported by an anonymous financial gift of $4000 to be used on church maintenance needs. The first significant need that was determined was the restoration of the garage at the parsonage. Built in 1913, the garage then may have been a stable. Under the leadership of Dick S a crew of men including Dick Mi, Len, Jim, Keith, John, Randy, Dan and Dave have since the middle of May resided three sides of the garage and have more recently been restructuring the front of the building including putting in new doors and sills. Because of the condition of the garage pastors have not been able to use the garage for any more than storage.

Other members of UMM have taken the responsibility of regular mowing and trimming of the lawns at both the church and parsonage. Those that have worked on that project have included Dan, Tom N and Art. Other members of the organization have signed up to mow at some time during the mowing season. All of the shrubs around the church and front of the parsonage have been clipped and should be good for the rest of the summer.

If  I have forgotten the name of someone who has worked  on either of the projects mentioned above please let me know so that I might correct this blog entry.

Another area of the spectrum of activities that is also underway is the planning of social activities that will not only bring us together as a men’s group but might also include other family members. The first such activity was headed by Andy who set up a visit to Hadlock Field to see the Sea Dogs play the Harrisburg Senators on June 22, a Wednesday night. Sad to say that the Sea Dogs loss, but we all had great seats on the third base side with a good view of the whole field. One of those attending thought we/she was here primarily for the eating and at one point (5th inning) almost everyone in the group were munching on Sea Dog Biscuits. For those that may not know these are not what you normally think of as “dog biscuits”. The Hadlock Seadog biscuits are two chocolate chip cookies with ice cream in between. Certainly one would say they are not the healthiest thing on our menu, but ooooh so good!

A good time was had by all and those having a good time were Dick and Shari and daughter Beth, Lin and Judy, Keith and Becky and a granddaughter, Dick and Jeanne, Art and Marlene, Andy and his Dad, John, Dave, Tom N  and Dan.
