Second Senior Luncheon held on Thursday, October 12, 2017

Ellis Hall was abuzz with activity by 9 AM on a beautiful fall morning in South Portland. Even before this day several women of the church including Joanne, Carol, Janice, Barbara and Betty Sp had already called many seniors in the community to invite them to the Community Senior Luncheon and program scheduled for this day. Chef Brad had begun the preparation of the meal which would be macaroni and cheese with ham, a tossed salad and apple crisp for dessert.

Dick S was responsible for getting the program “Scams Awareness”. Since a local police officer was not available for this presentation two police officers from Cape Elizabeth graciously volunteered to give the program. David Galvan and Mark Duval made a well-questioned presentation with audience participation.

Marlene had coordinated the event preparations as she had for the first luncheon in September. Ruth provided floral centerpieces and suggestion sheets.

In the kitchen, Brad was assisted by Dick S and Keith with input from Shari and Rosemary. Servers included Pat, Becky, Barbara, Jody, Janice and Betty. Cashiers were Joanne and Susan.

Set-up and cleanup crews included Dan, Ruth, Pastor Tom, Dick and Shari S, Keith and Becky, Marlene and Art.

While the program was supposed to get underway at 11 AM it was nearly 11:30 before enough of the visitors were present to go forward. The meal was served at about 12:15PM and most everyone had left by 1 PM.

A good time was had by all. There were fewer guests present this month but the number of those of us working on the event increased.

Next month the Senior Community Luncheon will be held on Thursday, November 9 with a patriotic theme.

Bishop Sudarshana Devadhar's Prayer from Sunday Oct. 8

God help us!
Help us ...
to take the next faithful step forward
not based on ...
doctrine, tradition, or theology;
judgments, fears, or convictions;
notions of who are the righteous and unrighteous.
God help us!
Help us ...
to take the next small faithful step forward
that is neither ...
right or wrong;
good or bad;
for or against;
left or right;
pro or con.
God, help us!
Help us ...
above all else,
to simply take the one next faithful step forward,
out of love.
only love;
nothing less,
nothing more;
just love;
undiluted love.
Then ...
only then,
can we know ...
that the way forward is with you ...
our Help in ages past,
our Hope for years to come.
Then ...
only then,
can we know ...
that our way forward is through you,
the Way,
the Truth,
the Life.
God, help us ...
Help us as we take the small faithful next step forward ...
to reflect your grace and glory,
to embody the Word made flesh,
to move freely by the power of the Holy Spirit.
We offer our prayer in the precious name of Christ Jesus.
Amen.
