Prayers for good weather and a good turnout were answered as the first annual Community Awareness Fair was held at Peoples Church on Saturday, May 6. The parking lot outside Ellis Hall was decorated with colorful balloons and bunting, and served as a lively entrance to the displays inside. It was a carnival atmosphere with face painting and games for the children, a Cakewalk for children of all ages, and of course, great food for everyone!Those who attended were surprised to find free popcorn, lemonade, hot dogs, home baked beans and cotton candy to please their palates. Hard to believe, but people were ready for hot dogs by 9:20 in the morning!
The fair was part of the “40 Days of Community” project, a unique opportunity to share the love of God within and beyond our church community. It was a great way to work and fellowship with our church family, and to develop relationships with community organizations and individuals who may have wondered for years what Peoples United Methodist Church is all about. The event was a reminder of how many connections Peoples has had in the past with the Greater Portland community, and how God is calling us to continue reaching out with His grace to serve our neighbors, both near and far.
