Casco Bay Leadership Training

Nearly 50 folks representing mainly churches in the Casco Bay Cluster attended Leadership training on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Ellis Hall located at Peoples United Methodist Church. Sessions were held for Trustees, Staff Parish, Effective Neighboring and Finance following an opening keynote address by Jane Ives. The title of her presentation was " Empathy Before Education". Active Listening skills were practiced and Jane used a number of experiences from her own experiences in church, community and home to illustrate the points she was making.

The churches that were represented included Peoples, Elm Street, First, Thornton, West Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth and Gorham. Pastors in attendance included Tom Frey, Andrea Harvey, Lynn Campbell, Priscilla Dreyman, Jim Young and Sally Poland. Group sessions were led by Rich Hughen, Jim Young, Sally Poland, Art Tordoff and Jane Ives. Refreshments were served and the program was concluded with prayer at 12:30 PM.

Down on the Farm

On Saturday, December 17 Pastor Tom and Kelly opened their home in Mount Vernon to all cookie lovers. When two folks from Peoples arrived around 10:30 AM the house was abuzz with activity. People of all ages could be seen preparing, cooking and munching a variety of delectable morsels. There were cookies of several descriptions as well as candy with needhams and toffee among the choices. Especially good in the cookie department were the cream cheese cookies although the crinkled chocolate with sprinkled powdered sugar were hard to stay away from. While munching and crunching we were introduced to a number of folks of all ages that were related, friends, parishioners of previous churches or people that had something to do with education at Maranacook High School.

Getting to Mt. Vernon was a challenge as snow squalls made the highway from Falmouth to nearly Richmond very slippery and precarious. Several cars and other vehicles were off the road and 45 was the speed limit. By the time we passed by Richmond the sky cleared and upon arrival at the homestead the folks there could not believe what we had experienced.

As is the case at Peoples children took to Tom as they do here. We found Kelly busy in the kitchen as well as new son-in-law Matt Davis. Patsy and Irene were both busy helping in the kitchen as well as making folks throughout the house feel welcome. Tom had spent a number of hours decorating the house.

Thanks for the invitation Tom and Kelly, we really enjoyed ourselves. Here are a few pictures that I took while there.

An Advent Thought

Advent is a time of anticipation, waiting expectantly for something good to happen. And we know it is something good because it is to come from God. We read in the Old Testament the prophets’ words that a Savior would come and the Israelites waited for that promise of light to be fulfilled during some very dark times.

We know that promise was fulfilled in the coming of Jesus and we celebrate that fulfillment at Christmas. The season of Advent is an invitation to experience the sense of anticipation that precedes the coming of Christ.

Taking secular music and offering it with a spiritual understanding is nothing new. A recent example is in the movie Sister Act, where many Motown tunes are sung to the glory of God.

With that in mind, during this season of Advent, my mind turns to the musical West Side Story and the Sondheim/Bernstein song “Something’s Coming.”

What A Difference A Day Makes

As I sat at my daughter’s wedding a few days ago, I began to reflect on the milestones of our lives—those moments that clearly designate a significant change in our lives. When we pass a milestone, life can never be the same. We all have moments like that.

Sometimes those moments are the result of circumstances beyond our control—such as an unexpected death of a loved one. Other times, we are not aware of their significance until sometime later-- when I took a job at a summer stock company in Waterville over 25 years ago I thought it was just another job. I didn’t know I would meet Kelly Nelson and find the love of my life.

But we actually have control over most of our lives milestones—they are the result of our choices, decisions and actions. God gifted us with a free will that allows us to determine and create milestones at any time. I believe God wants us to do just that because in creating milestones, we are choosing to move out of our comfort zone; choosing to risk; choosing to trust in God’s promise to provide for our needs. Milestones can bring us closer to God.

I urge each of us to take some time in the coming days and reflect; prayerfully discern where we are and where God may be calling us to be. Let us intentionally create a moment that clearly designates where we are from where we are going. Let’s have a milestone of faith that brings us to new understandings of service and love. Let’s have a point in time that we can point to and say, “That’s the moment I chose to move closer to God.”

Some Thoughts

I remember back in the seventies when the twin towers were being built. It was not universally desired that they be constructed—petitions to stop the project were circulated, traditionalists were concerned about the status of the Empire State Building, nearby residents were concerned about the shadow cast by the towers. But they were built and soon became an everyday part of life in a city that is noted for always changing.

I remember going to the towers because there was a TKTS booth inside (where you could purchase half-price theater tickets.) It was the only indoor TKTS booth in New York and was great when it was raining.

I remember taking Patsy and Irene to New York in the summer of 2000. We didn’t visit the Twin Towers, but went to the top of the Empire State Building and viewed them from that vantage point.

I was serving as Election Warden in the town of Mount Vernon when the planes struck. Being at the polls the information came in bits and pieces until a television was brought in and we saw for ourselves. I remember trying to call New York, trying to locate those I knew who were supposed to be there that day. I remember in the many days following hearing names of those I didn’t know were there—names I hadn’t thought of in years became etched in my mind.

Here we are. A decade has passed. Much has changed, but much has not.

We were talking about this upcoming anniversary at our Cluster meeting the other day and the cries of don’t forget.

“Don’t forget.” The words have a connotation of desire for revenge; of I’m going to make you pay. So I choose to Remember. Re-member. Finding a way of coming together, a way of building up from the rubble. There we will find God.

Dare to move out of your comfort zone

Coming to Peoples has changed a lot for me and Tom, pushing us to connect with new and different ways of doing things. I have spent most of my life in rural areas, so living in the "big city" is a huge change for me. I'm used to small town, small school, lots of space. This summer has been an awakening for us--some of it really positive, other parts of it not so comfortable. God has been in all of it.

The following is from a blog called Awake in the World by Debra Moffitt, published on beliefnet.com. It connects quite well with Tom's previous blog entry. What do you think?

Comfort can be a trap. It’s not because we’re comfortable with things that they’re necessarily good for us. One may get used to a shoe that rubs the foot or a bad smell, but that doesn’t make it good or right. When we’re truly dedicated to pursuing a spiritual life the universe conspires to accelerate our growth. Often this means being prepared for big changes that move us out of our comfort zone. Seeking comfort and security can be a trap. We opt for the decisions that appear safe rather than the ones that are right for us. Staying with a mate for financial reasons, holding onto to costly possessions, sticking to habits that may be detrimental, but are familiar, are a few of of the comfort traps.

A dream summed up comfort for me. In the dream I walk into my apartment with a light-filled guide – a higher, wiser part of myself. We’re standing at the top of some stairs looking into it. The room is a mess. It’s drab, dark and dingy. Chairs are overturned and papers are strewn about. Later I return with the guide who shows me the same place only this time it is perfectly clean and tidy. A round table stands in the center with a crystal vase full of roses. Light streams in from above. The chairs are set up as if waiting for a symphony to come in. It’s a beautiful makeover. I turn to the guide and say, “I liked it better the other way.” When I awoke, I had an ah-ha moment. I didn’t really like it the other way, I just felt comfortable with the mess. The mess had become a habit. The dream represented my inner life and the new, clean space represented the transformations coming through meditation and inner work.

Dare to explore the areas of your life that have become comfort zones and examine what’s really good for you. Look at where it will be helpful to move into new, unexplored territory. Sometimes we stay in relationships and jobs out of comfort though they may be stifling us. Even birds that learn to fly have to make a leap of faith the first time.

It has been a summer of firsts. My initial weeks here at Peoples have been a series of benchmarks—opportunities to accomplish things I‘ve never attempted before. I was hesitant at first to participate, but I took a chance.

This was the first time I ever flew a kite. Now, I have been told to go fly a kite on numerous occasions, but this was the first time I actually had one attached to a string and tried to get it airborne. Notice I said “tried.” Despite numerous efforts to tug, pull and run, the kite never stayed afloat for more than a few seconds. The movie Mary Poppins made it look much easier. While my kite may have failed in its flight, I met some people (all willing to offer kite advice), got some exercise and gave several people some slapstick entertainment. I may have planned to fly a kite, but God had other plans and it was all good.

This summer was also the first time I ever steered a boat and though I still confuse starboard and port, we avoided any accidents on the water. (Wes, Betty, Tom, Barbara and Kelly demonstrated true courage when I took the wheel—they didn’t even cringe; at least, I didn’t notice if they did.)

Essentially, I learned I am not the best kite flyer in Maine, nor will I win any awards for my boating prowess. But I'm glad I stepped out of my comfort zone on both occasions. I learned a few things, gave some observers something to talk about at the dinner table and actually enjoyed the experience.

The prophet Isaiah tells us that God is always making things new. Each day is a new start, a new beginning. God’s creation continues to move forward. Are we willing to get out of our own way and move forward with God, or will we be the biggest impediment on the journey? Can we open ourselves to truly believe that with God all things are possible? I am looking forward to what the fall brings.

Blessings for the new school year!

In scripture every important journey begins with a blessing.

One of the most important journeys many of us take is the one that takes us through school. It can be a time of challenges, of fear, of uncertainty. So, it is a good time to reflect and remember we do not journey alone.

On August 28, Peoples UMC will join with many other churches throughout the country and celebrate the start of this school year with a Blessing of the Backpacks. This will be an opportunity for all God’s children to bring their backpacks and school supplies to worship and join in a special blessing.

We will also include a blessing for backpacks and school supplies which have been collected to be donated to schools for those in need. If you would like to help with this effort, please bring them to Peoples on or before Sunday, August 28.

We invite all children, youth and families to bring your backpacks and school supplies to Peoples UMC at 10 am on August 28 and join in a new start for the upcoming school year!

I once was lost, but now I'm found...

So, I’m driving around South Portland the other day, trying to find a specific place when I notice that I am lost. Not surprising with my sense of direction and not surprising that I left on this adventure without the new GPS device. What was surprising, though, is when I came upon a building I recognized.

You see, a few days earlier Tom Nelson was kind enough to give Kelly and me a tour of the area. There was a lot of ground covered and a lot of information shared. So much in fact that I was not sure how much of it I would actually remember.

But, here I was, hopelessly adrift, when I saw this building and all that Tom had said about it came flooding back and I was able to find my way again (for that trip anyway).

It’s funny how we never know what we will remember until the time comes when we do.

The Word is like that. We receive it, sometimes with deliberate intention, other times seemingly half listening. Sometimes we feel it doesn’t relate to us or we cannot fully grasp what is being offered and then something happens and it all comes flooding back to us with an understanding we may not have had before. It can be startling not only what we remember, but how we remember it.

We find that is true with the children. We often wonder just how much of a worship service, Sunday School class, youth group gathering, VBS week is actually sinking in and, more times than not, we are surprised days or weeks later when we hear words reflected back to us that shows not only remembering, but understanding.

It happens to us much the same way and why not—after all, we are all God’s children.

My prayer is we remain open to the Spirit, be patient with each other, and come to see and understand the blessings that are found in each opportunity.

Jesus sent his twelve harvest hands out with this charge:

"Don't begin by traveling to some far-off place to convert unbelievers. And don't try to be dramatic by tackling some public enemy. Go to the lost, confused people right here in the neighborhood. Tell them that the kingdom is here. Bring health to the sick. Raise the dead. Touch the untouchables. Kick out the demons. You have been treated generously, so live generously". –Matthew 10:5-8 (The Message)

In the interests of clarification, please note:

The only phone number where you can currently reach Pastor Tom is the church phone number, 799-1413. The answering machine will pick up and you can leave a message. Pastor Tom is checking it several times each day.

The phone number 619-1509 cannot be switched over from Pastor Gwynneth, and must be phased out. You cannot reach the church and/or Pastor Tom with that phone number.

The parsonage phone number 799-6814 will not be available until after July 13, when TimeWarner will be coming to change the number to a land line.

The best way to reach Pastor Tom is to send him an email at pastortom@peoplesumc.com or call the church.

Today (Friday) we presented the poster that the Peoples Sunday School made. The kids loved hearing about some of the decorations which included moose, lobsters and blueberries. Yesterday, we chaperoned an awesome field trip to the Herr's Chip Factory. The favorite part for most of the kids was getting some chips off the conveyor, still hot! Our last day (Friday) our Maine team also led "hype-it-up" time which included songs, skits and games. Will post some videos! We closed the day by hosting a dinner for the Urban Promise staff which was much appreciated. A great week. The evening will be filled with packing and cleaning, and an early start for home Saturday morning. Hope you can join us for a welcome home party! A wonderful group came out for the send-of Saturday, then the team picked up Pastor Gwyneth in Merrimac, and met the Dunn family in Wilmington. We worshipped Sunday at Cornerstone Baptist Church for 3 hours which was amazing! Monday was our first day working at Camp Freedom. Camp Freedom Update

We have been fortunate that the weather has been in the 80s, much cooler than last year. The Camp Format was the much the same as last year so the fact that our work group consisted of mostly camp 'veterans' made the transition very easy. We each went with a team leader or class leader and could help out right away. During meal times we helped out passing out food and cleaning up after meals. We would break down the tables and clean up the dining room after each meal freeing the leaders and teachers from those tasks.

Our work details were even more varied than last year. There was the usual bulk mailing and assisting around the office where necessary. There was no work in the Sumac problem areas. This year our projects included lawn mowing, weeding, trimming trees and shrubs. Other opportunities included moving furniture and repairing wheelbarrows. Fred started training on some of the Computer related tasks that Gwyneth and Jamie were doing(such as updating the blog) and is training for Mission Trip Administration.

We are Chaperoning a field trip this afternoon to a Potato Chip factory and a Zoo today and taking a tour of Wilmington and all the Urban Promise Centers tomorrow. We are hosting a Pizza Party for the Staff and Street leaders tomorrow night.

There has been a Gospel Band practicing next door to our house from 7PM to 9PM several nights a week this year and last year. It has been enjoyable just listening from next door, we were invited over so stopped in on Rehearsal. We had a wonderful time and thanked them for sharing their talents.

Peoples In Transition

Since early in May the members of Peoples United Methodist Church in South Portland have known that our present pastors, Gwyneth and Jamie Arrison and their family would be moving to serve in Merrimacport and Amesbury, Massachusetts after 6 full years with us. It is always with mixed emotions that the pastors as well as the congregation experience this kind of change. It is a practice of the Methodist church that pastors are considered “Itinerant” and are expected to move to new placements. Having been a part of the Peoples family since 1948, this will be my sixteenth change. Some of those changes have taken place over a short time while some have been more lengthy. Five to seven years seems to be about the average. During the Arrison years we have experienced marked growth in the Sunday school experience, changes in communicative methods both among parishioners and in church services, and have continued to maintain a number of previously developed ministries. The initiation of a more diversified missions program has also been a significant part of Peoples’ life especially with the advent of the Urban Promise connection.

While we have the Arrisons to thank for helping in the initiation of some of these programs, it is still the strength of the church members who carry out programs with their time, talent and financial contributions.
On Sunday, June 19, the Staff Parish Committee prepared a celebration for the Arrisons at the close of church service, in Ellis Hall. Most of the church congregation on this date stayed for the celebration and a chance to thank the Arrisons one more time for their time shared with us. New Pastor Appointed to Peoples Announced

Pastors Jamie and Gwyneth are being reappointed as of July 1. You can read more about the Arrisons new appointment here. On Sunday, May 21, the new pastor was announced who has been appointed to Peoples. Our SPRC Chair, Keith Snoddy writes the following:

On this past Saturday, May 21, the Staff Parish Relations Committee met with our District Superintendent, Mike Davis, to meet our new pastor, Tom Frey. After meeting and interviewing Tom It was the consensus opinion of SPRC that Tom is a good fit for Peoples. The following is a brief bio about him:

Pastor Tom Frey has lived in Maine for 25 years, having been born in Brooklyn and raised in New York. His wife Kelly is a high school Spanish teacher and they have two daughters Patsy (age 21) and Irene (age 18).

He is a second career pastor, having worked in the entertainment field and as a writer in the past. He has degrees in Theater Arts, English, a Master’s of Divinity and has done master’s work in secondary education. Peoples is his third appointment, having served churches in West Cumberland and Richmond.

Having a strong commitment to Christ, Tom loves working with children and youth and is passionate about preaching God’s love and bringing that love everywhere and to everyone possible. He believes that church is about what we do and not where we meet.

An additional announcement is that as a result of Tom's appointment to Peoples we will be getting a new DS. This is because Tom's daughter Patsy will be marrying one of Mike's sons in September this year. Conference rules do not allow a DS to supervise a family member so we will get a new DS with this appointment, Our new DS will be Beverly Stenmark who is the current DS for the Mid Maine district.

Partners in Ministry Message from the Bishop

Dear Partners in Ministry,

♦ “HE GOT AWAY!" Recently we were worshipping with the "resurrection people" of a church which is needing to envision some fresh, life-giving ways of worship and mission. (I hope your church is doing the same....we all need to). During the children’s time, the pastor, building on the Easter story, was talking about the empty tomb. With all seriousness, she asked the kids, "What happened to Jesus?" One little guy, without missing a beat, blurted out, "He got away!"

Amen, child of God. In the resurrection, Jesus "got away" from all that would entomb us, all that would hold us back, all the smell of death that lurks in our world, in our churches, and in our own hearts.....and He invites us to follow Him into new life. I hope your church, and our conference is running as fast and joyously as we can after the risen Christ who's got a way for us to new life.

♦ MOVIN' ON OUT...this summer. Jesus not only "moved on out" of the tomb, but his whole "way" of ministry was "movin' on out" of the synagogues, out to where the hurt and pain and margins of his time were. He challenged his disciples to "go into all the world" (Mark 16:15)....move on out. On Pentecost (get ready for wind and fire on June 12, again) His followers moved on out into the diverse crowds of the city sharing "the mighty works of God!" (Acts 2:11)....and the crowds thought these Christians were a little tipsy. John Wesley was thought to be a little crazy to move on out to preach in the coal fields, Asbury to move on out to America, Jesse Lee to move on out from sunny Virginia to the snows of New England (of course he hadn't discovered skiing yet)....but they all dared to go. What about you and me?

Summer time is a great time to be "movin' on out" of our buildings and into our communities and world in some new ways. Here are some ideas some of our churches have done:
Move Worship out onto the lawn, or to the town commons, or city park, or state park. Many of our "beach area" churches have a service on the beach (along with one at the church). Do not "hide the light of your worship under a bushel".....outside services are often inviting to people who might not "dress up and enter the inner-sanctum" of a church building. Encourage people to bring brunch food, blankets to sit on, (remember Jesus' feeding of the 5,000?...well...) The last church I served, the 9 a.m. on the lawn service quickly became the largest of the four services we had on weekends....plus attracting new people right off the city street.
Do your "fellowship time" outside after your service(s) that are held at the church. Let the community see that you are alive and well and having a good time. Do "lemonade on the lawn" instead of "coffee in the cloister!" Expand it to have a "Good Neighbors Block Party" a couple of times during the summer inviting everyone in town (or around) to come to get to know each other. Some churches have built in a 5K walk/run for a mission like helping victims in Haiti, or Japan, or your own area...it gives a great opportunity to introduce non-church folk to the great work the church does around to world through UMCOR etc.
Take Vacation Bible School on the Road to somebody's backyard in a residential neighborhood, or at a farm (a lot of kids have never seen a cow face to face), or a trailer park, or the community room in a low income housing project, instead of expecting people to come to the church. I've heard of churches doing VBS in picnic pavilions at a local amusement park, or at an automobile dealer's show room. (He was a member of the church, and loved doing it....plus it was biblical; "and they were all of one Accord.") Use your imagination....and connections...to reach new kids in new places. Plus, don't forget to plan follow up contacts and events for the kids who do come to your VBS in the fall, wherever you hold it. That's a good way to jump-start your Sunday School or after-school ministries with kids all year around.
Move on out with a volunteer in mission (VIM) team either in your own community or for a week of travel to some other part of New England....or the world. Some churches have a project they are doing every Saturday during the summer in their community....sometimes in cooperation with groups like Habitat for Humanity, etc. This allows people to join in when they can during the summer...plus invite friends to join in too. VIM trips are planned by many of our churches, and even if you don't have one going from your church, check with your district office about other churches that you could team with this summer, in preparation for developing your own VIM trip/team next summer. You will find that these experiences are powerful spiritual and missional times for youth, adults, and families..."movin' on out."

♦ OSAMA BIN LADEN, JESUS, AND ME. Jesus never said it would be easy for me or those of us who want to follow Him in the terrible realities of this world. But this is what He said: "You have heard it said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." (Matt. 5:43-45)

And this is what Paul wrote in trying to follow Jesus in the terrible realities of this world; "Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God; for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.' No, 'if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him drink; for by doing so you will heap burning coals upon his head.' Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." (Romans 12:19-21).

So, I've been unsettled by the Word of God in the terrible realities of this world and the way Osama Bin Laden died. I hope you have been wrestling with this too. For me this is no time for celebration, but rather for confession about how far our world and my own heart has yet to go if we are to truly follow the Christ who came to save us and our world in the midst of the terrible realities. "O Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us."

♦ CALLING ALL CONFIRMANDS Last year over 1500 new people professed their faith in Jesus Christ and joined the movement of United Methodists here in New England. Many of those were young people who were confirmed around this time of year. At Annual Conference we will celebrate those being confirmed in our churches and close our annual conference on Saturday, June 11, beginning at 1:00 p.m. with an one hour service dedicated to and involving these young people. I will be sharing with them some stories of young followers of Jesus Christ who have made a powerful difference in this world, just as they can and are. I will also share with each of them a special token of the day and their confirmation.

I invite you to come and bring your confirmands for this great time at Gordon College. Those who come in the morning can be involved in putting together food kits for our Stop Hunger Now mission project. It is to be a time of reminding all of us that we are Partners in Ministry in a global movement for the sake of Christ and the transformation of the world. I will look forward to seeing you there!

Spring Clean Up Day

It was a great day to come out to breakfast and a great day to work in and outside the church. If my calculations are correct there were 20 folks that came out to breakfast for 7:30 in the vestry and when it came time to go out and work around the church yard or inside cleaning windows there were 29 church members of every size and shape and their were another two Scout Dads with five Scouts that worked at raking, mowing, chopping weeding and cleaning windows just to name a number of the chores that were carried out. The weather couldn’t have been much better and the church property has rarely looked as good as it does as a result. Thanks again Brad for being our provider of nourishment and sustenance.

We have the Lord to thank for all that was done, for the food we were provided with and the good feeling that we all have felt by contributing to the community that is known as Peoples. Thanks to all.

Mission Trip 2011 - How YOU Can Help

Peoples Church is gearing up for our second summer 2011 mission trip! The trip date is set for June 25-July 2, 2011. The destination is back to Urban Promise in Wilmington, DE ministering to underprivileged inner city youth. You can view a short 2010 Mission Trip Slideshow here. It's worth a peak!

Those going on the 2011 Mission Trip include: Earle Harvey, Fred Wade, Ellen Dunn, Isaac Dunn, Nathan Dunn, Carolyn Civitarese and Pastor Gwyneth.

This year, you may not be "going" on the mission trip, but there are many ways you can still be part of the team. Here are just a few, and if you have other ideas, please contact Pastor Gwyneth or any of the team members, who in addition to the above going on the trip include Betty Lane, Betty Smith, Shane and Joely Ross, and others are always welcome.

• Attend the Send-Off in the church parking lot on Saturday, June 25 at 8am to show your support for the whole team.

• Sign up for a slot in the prayer-vigil during the trip, which will cover the whole team in prayer during travel and mission-hours of their trip.
• Donate mission supplies. List from Urban Promise to be provided soon.
• Take an angel from the tree to support the team financially. For gas cards, it is most convenient for the team to purchase American Express cards so they can be used at any gas station. Or if you prefer, you can donate with cash or check which will be converted to American Express cards.
• Serve as a Prayer Buddy for one member of the team, whom you covenant to pray for regularly throughout the trip as well as attend the send-off and welcome home to show your support for him/her.
• Attend the Welcome-Home in the church parking lot on Saturday, July 2 (about 6pm) to welcome the team home.
• Attend worship on July 3 and 10 to hear team members share about their mission experience.

Pastors Announce Reappointment

Pastors Gwyneth and Jamie announced in worship today that they have been appointed to churches in northern Massachusetts. As of July 1, Pastor Jamie will be serving half time at First UMC in Amesbury. They have just voted to become a new site of the large and growing multi-site ministry in Plaistow and Sandown New Hampshire. Pastor Gwyneth will also be serving half time, at Merrimacport UMC, although will be taking a renewal leave through the summer so will begin her appointment September 1.

Though neither Peoples nor the pastors were looking for a change in appointment at this time, the specific needs of the Amesbury and Merrimacport churches led the Bishop and District Superintendents to make this change. They are in the process of discerning who will be the new pastor appointed to Peoples. Though this could take a few weeks, the new pastor will be ready to begin July 1. The Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) is already in conversation with our District Superintendent about the specific gifts Peoples is currently seeking in a pastor. Please contact Keith Snoddy as the chair if you have any input for the committee.

With the announcement, Pastors Jamie and Gwyneth preached a shared sermon on dealing with the stress of this transition with direct communication, prayer, Bible study and a complete dependence on Jesus. In all of this it is helpful to remember that the church is the people, regardless of changes in building location, pastors or ministries. This is not the time to go looking for another church! Rather, it’s the time to draw even closer together as the Peoples family, and continue reaching out to the community in vital ministry.

Please feel free to contact the pastors through the next several months with questions or just some conversation. Pastor Jamie will also be leading a Sunday School class beginning May 8 at 8:30am to address topics such as our United Methodist connection, appointment system, care and hospitality for the new pastor and family, preparing the lay leadership for this transition, etiquette in terms of contact with the outgoing pastors, and other subjects that may arise.

Here are some questions for all of us to ponder in the next few months:
• How you I help continue the ministries of Peoples through this transition and make them even stronger?
• What are some ways I can show hospitality to the new pastor and family? Some ideas might include having flowers waiting in the parsonage, arranging for meals for the first few days after arriving, providing a tour of the community, and having everyone wear nametags in worship.
• What would be most helpful in order to say goodbye to the Arrison family?

Please ponder these questions and others that arise, and please especially be in prayer for all of the pastors and churches who are in transition.

Easter Sunrise Resurrection Celebration

We never did actually see the sun, but we did witness the resurrection of the Son! Jason opened worship on bagpipes with Amazing Grace, followed by a dramatized reading of the Scripture complete with Jesus, Mary and two angels and meditation by Pastor Gwyneth. SPRING CLEAN UP SATURDAY, MAY 7

Spring clean up will be held on Saturday, May 7 beginning at 8 AM TO WHENEVER! THIS IS A FUN DAY FOR RAKING, GARDEN WORK, BUSH TRIMMING, GUTTER CLEANING. etc.
One year a group of people decided that they wanted to work indoors and brought pails and cloths and cleaned every window in the church and the Rosses cleaned everything in the nursery and a batch of people cleaned every one of those white tables used for just about everything!
Last Fall David Bruneau was VERY popular because he brought a leaf blower that he strapped on his back and the Spring before a Cub Scout dad, Scott Frank, brought his. David blew leaves and Scott blew all the sand out of the parking lot. What fun it was to watch.
HINT#1: don't park your car in the lots but on the street unless you want it sand blasted There is a tree in the parsonage yard that we are thinking needs taking down.
HINT #2: bring cameras to record the silly things we might possibly attempt

SO COME ONE, COME ALL AND SPRUCE UP YOUR CHURCH and have fun. Some of the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts are coming too. Last Fall most everyone was aged 60 and older and we need some younger people to come and keep us on our toes. Bring the children to train them for your own yard work that needs to be done. Coffee and drinks usually are available for us to keep up our strength!!!

Chili Chowder Challenge Great Success

The Peoples UMC Chili-Chowder Challenge on Sunday, April 10 served as a wonderful fund-raiser for the June 2011 mission trip to inner city Wilmington, Delaware, and also a fun time with great food. . There were three chili and three chowder entries, and all were excellent! There were also bread bowls donated so that folks could eat more of their favorite or take home for later. Channel 8 even came in for a short interview with Fred Wade who headed up the event. The fundraiser generated $233, but most importantly was lots of fun for all ages. Dear Peoples Family,

The first day of the week that the passage refers to is the first Easter Sunday. When we come to church Easter Sunday, we often come all prepared too. We come to what can feel like a full tomb and we know exactly what to expect – what hymns will be played, who will be there and what will be said. Easter does not offer us many surprises any more. So where can we go to find the angels ready to give us the Good News that Jesus is alive and that we can have new lives as well?

If you come prepared on Easter morning, you may find the experience at church or out on Fisherman’s Point. The women who found the empty tomb were at an all time low having witnessed Jesus - friend, son, savior - die a terrible death on the cross just a few days before. Are you at that very low point where you are ready to hear that Jesus is alive and loves you?

Yet, for most people that special time of coming to a new relationship with Jesus and with the family of the church comes through regular prayer, study and connecting with others in the family. Some people fall in love with Jesus at first sight and others through a deepening sense of relationship that began with just a regular acquaintance. Through our various worship, prayer, social and small group activities, you can begin to foster a relationship with Jesus that will blossom into the type of life-changing surprise the woman had that morning.

We hope you have a new life-giving experience for you and your whole family this Easter morning as you choose to join with the family at Peoples to draw closer to Jesus together. He gave his life for us not to take ours away, but that we would be drawn into the family of God – a family of abundant life. A glorious surprise awaits.

We hope to inspire some more folks to go on the trip this year, from Peoples, from other United Methodist Churches, or folks from the community who would like to experience missions. Why go on a mission trip? Missions renews your faith, away mission inspires increased local mission, and you will experience God in ways simply not possible without moving out of our comfort zone in away mission trips. Church mission trips also help Christians understand and reclaim their role as being sent into the world to love and serve others in the name of Jesus Christ.

If you are interested, here is some information you need to know!

Mission Application deadline is May 1, 2011. No applications will be accepted after this date. You may download the online application here, fill it out on your computer, print and sign. Or you may download the paper application here to fill out by hand.
Registration fee is $50 due with the application. The remaining $200 is due June 1. Additional costs include approximately $100 for food and travel expenses, although some may be covered by church fundraisers.
Team meeting attendance is mandatory for all team members. The next meeting is scheduled for 7pm on Sunday, May 1.

Best of Broadway

Their performance is always the Saturday of Mother's Day weekend (a great mother's day gift by the way!) at Merrill Auditorium, and raises money for the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital. Chili-Chowder Challenge April 10

The Peoples UMC Chili-Chowder Challenge will be held Sunday, April 10, 11:30am, with awards and presentation at 12:45pm. We hope everyone will be able to attend this fun event, which will also serve as a fund-raiser for the June 2011 mission trip to inner city Wilmington, Delaware.
   Suggested donation $5/person or $15/family, although any amount will be accepted and those submitting chili-chowder entries attend without charge. Additional donations for our mission trip will also be welcomed.

Cancer Prayer and Support Group Ministry: cancer ministries at the local level

Den Morton, a Christian cancer survivor, presents A Cancer Ministry at our District Ministry Team workshop in May. Hear what Cressey Road United Methodist Church in Gorham, Maine is doing in a ministry for those touched by cancer. Den’s presentation includes the “whys and hows” of bringing this ministry home to your church, including cancer support group dynamics, support group start-up kits, The Natural Church Development connection, resources and training, and more.

That's an important question to wrestle with spiritually. Those who have placed their trust in Jesus have the confidence to know that their inheritance is eternal life, and those who have been faithful disciples long to hear the words from their Lord himself: "Well done, good and faithful servant." (Matthew 25:21).

But what happens to our spouse or children when we die? What happens to our home, car, savings account? Often people make assumptions about what happens to our estate upon our death, for instance that our spouse automatically receives all of the inheritance, or our children do if we have no spouse. Sadly, families are often mistaken in these assumptions, and end up losing much of their rightful estate ... if only the deceased had created a will. It is also imperative to have clear legal documents regarding the care of any minor children in the event of our death.

Angel Tree for Mission

   For those who attended Sunday you witnessed an amusing skit with Mission Mary, Ellen Dunn and Betty Lane! "What's this Christmas tree doing in the middle of our worship space?!" The rest of the skit answered that question.
   It's not a Christmas tree, but an ANGEL tree! And the ornaments aren't just to look at but to take.
   Each ornament in the shape of an angel has a different need listed, such as gasoline for the trip or American express card for groceries or tolls, all in different amounts ranging between $5 to $400 - $400 is the amount needed to fully sponsor one team member.
   All are invited to take an angel off the mission angel tree at Peoples with the way they feel called to financially support our mission team going to inner-city Wilmington in June to work with under-privileged children.
   When you are ready, bring in your angel with the amount promised, place in an envelope with your name (if you would like a receipt for tax purposes) and place in the offering. You will then have the angel returned to you as a reminder to continue praying for the team.

A message from the Bishop (posted a few months ago and never publicized, but worth reading!)

♦ IMAGINE NO MALARIA Last week I returned from a meeting of our United Methodist Council of Bishops, Latin American Methodist Bishops, and Bishops from the "Methodist family", but not United Methodist, from around the world.....we now number about 77 million world-wide. Many of those Bishops serve in areas where the majority of Methodists (and others) live in extreme poverty, on less than $1 a day. And many of those areas face severe hunger, undrinkable water, lack of education and health care, and the killer diseases of tuberculosis, HIV-AIDS, and Malaria.
   Many of you have participated in giving to Nothing But Nets ($10 per net) and Imagine No Malaria (providing medicine and treatments) that we United Methodists have been leading in partnership with the National Basketball Association, “Sports Illustrated,” the United Nations, and now many other organizations. Thank you. Thank you......was what we heard from Bishops all over the world.
   Is it making any difference?
   YES!
   The latest report from the UN is that, for the first time, the number of deaths from malaria is declining. Children are being saved. And one Bishop told me that people who are receiving nets from us are asking....."Why do you do this?"...."Because we serve Christ who loves you, and calls us to love each other as ourselves." People are coming to believe in this God of Love and want to be a part of such a community of caring.
   We had this discussion just a few miles from the Panama Canal which symbolizes both a bold project that many thought impossible, as well as the injustices that surrounded tens of thousands of workers who died of malaria in the process of building the canal. Sometimes eradicating malaria seems like an impossible task, but the "project" to save millions of lives is succeeding because, in part, of the bold vision and generous giving of United Methodists like you. Our collective goal as United Methodists is to raise $75 million to combat malaria .... IMAGINE NO MALARIA....will you do your part?

♦ IMAGINE NO BUILDING....or at least not the building you're in right now. Sunday I had a great time worshipping with our congregations in Williamstown and North Adams, MA. After praying and imagining God's future for them, they have voted to come together as a new congregation and sell both of their existing buildings in preparation for a new future.
   Radical? Well, checking their histories, I discovered that for the first twenty-five years of their history the Williamstown congregation never had a church building! They moved around meeting in homes, the schoolhouse, and the "hall over F.H. Sherman’s store." The North Adams Methodists were also very "movable." They started in one building, moved to another 19 years later, moved to another 28 years after that, and to another 56 years after that.....four different buildings in about 100 years! And why did they move? Most of the time it was to enhance their ability to do ministry in their area. What about your building? Is it the best fit and the best stewardship of resources for ministry today?
   Oh, I know how we ( I ) can get attached to our buildings. They are full of sweet memories. I've lived in seven different houses over the years (not counting the fraternity house which was more like a barn) and had some sadness every time we moved.....but it was the people in our family who really made the "house a home".....and we all moved together.
   In the Williamstown newsletter there was a great quote: "The important thing is this: to be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we can become." "Behold, God is making all things new."
   This can be tough, I know. One of the members of the North Adams church reflected on sitting in the old sanctuary many Sundays and thinking about how wonderful it was.....and how empty it was.....and all the heat that was escaping. She wrote, "I wondered what it was that God wanted us to do. Did He want us to keep pouring money into this building, into heat, etc. or did He want us to be using those funds to be doing His work?" They have made the decision to move into a new future, trusting God, focusing on "God's work." And several said to me Sunday, "It feels good....even though it will be tough in some ways."
   What do you imagine God is saying to your congregation about your building? We have many buildings that are great tools for God's work in our communities....let's keep them, care for them and use them fully as launching pads for ministry and mission in our communities. But then we have some other buildings that......well......you know.......that have become more of a burden than a help for God's work in the 21st century. If you would like to talk about ways to evaluate the usefulness of your building...and options that other churches have found good....at least start the conversation with your District Superintendent and with your congregation. God might surprise you with a new future, too.

♦ STICKER SHOCK: THE FOOTBALL TEAM AND THE LIQUOR STORES While at the Williamstown/North Adams worship Sunday, I met the High School football coach and his wife who are helping in a great effort to address underage drinking in their area. Operation "Sticker Shock" is a project of the Northern Berkshires Communities Coalition "mobilizing for change on alcohol." The coach and members of the football team go into the area liquor stores and ask to put stickers on the bottles and cans that say "HEY YOU! IT'S ILLEGAL TO GIVE MINORS ALCOHOL." It's working. And interestingly, many of the owners of these stores are very cooperative. You may want to try it in your community. Get more information at www.nbccoalition.org/CMCA.
   Because of the devastating effects the use of alcohol can have for so many people in so many areas of life, the United Methodist Church continues to "affirm our long-standing support of abstinence from alcohol as a faithful witness to God's liberating and redeeming love for persons." (2008 Discipline) For the sake of our youth and those millions who are subject to addiction, I invite you to consider an alcohol and drug-free life style as a part of your witness.

Following a keynote address by Malcolm Burson, Climate Adaptation Program Manager of the Maine.Department of Environmental Protection, participants will take part in a dynamic group process that will allow participants to identify critical issues and form a consensus around next steps. Among possible topics to be explored:

the growing ethical challenges posed by climate change & how we respond;
how faith traditions can act to inform and inspire environmental stewardship; and
charting a collaborative course towards local and global sustainability.

UMCOR Assesses Response to Pacific Emergency

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is connecting with partners to assess damages and needs resulting from the powerful 8.9-magnitude earthquake and 33-foot-high tsunami that rocked Japan today.

As the tidal wave rolls across the Pacific, tsunami warnings have been issued throughout the region, from Japan to Chile. Small islands are in danger of being completely covered by the tidal wave, and developing countries are especially vulnerable, a Red Cross spokesperson told Reuters news agency.

The quake hit in the middle of the afternoon, at 2:46 Tokyo time, just off of Honshu, Japan’s most populous island. It is the strongest earthquake to hit Japan in the 140 years that records have been kept. It takes the place of last year’s earthquake in Chile as the fifth strongest ever anywhere in the world.

“UMCOR is closely monitoring the unfolding situation in the Pacific,” said Melissa Crutchfield, UMCOR executive for International Disaster Response.

“We’re in contact with our partners in the region, mindful of the still developing emergency in Japan as well as of the risk to other countries, such as Indonesia and the Philippines, and to Hawaii, which are expected to be impacted by the tsunami,” she said.

UMCOR head, the Rev. Cynthia Fierro Harvey, urged prayers for those affected by the disaster. She said that as needs become clarified, UMCOR will respond.

“Once again, in the wake of disaster and in the face of widespread need, we rely on the ever expansive generosity of United Methodists and all people of goodwill to help us respond to those whose lives have suddenly been turned upside down,” she said.

So far, 300 deaths have been reported in Japan, but as relief and recovery efforts get underway, the number of deaths and injured is expected to rise much higher.

The 33-foot tsunami barged into the port of Sendai in northeastern Japan, pushing buildings, cars, ships—everything in its path, far inland. In Tokyo, the quake disrupted electricity and ground and air transportation— and sent people fleeing from office buildings and homes for the safety of parks and other open areas.

Experience Easter ... Easter Experience

Last year one of our small groups used "Easter Experience" during Lent, and it meant so much to them that they are repeating the study again this Lent. So we have decided to invite the whole congregation to "Experience Easter" through this powerful 6-week study this year. In addition, the pastors will be starting a sermon series on March 20 in conjunction with the study sessions.

"The Easter Experience is a video-driven study with the power to change lives with the message of God’s loving plan for us. Using dramatic story-telling and challenging teaching by Kyle Idleman, the six-episode series brings the passion and resurrection to life."

Groups at Peoples will meet for 6 weeks, beginning week of March 20. Here's the schedule:

Sundays 11:30am - Group co-led by Martin Whittemore and Betty Lane. Lunch will be provided on March 20, and will discuss food options for future dates. Childcare will be provided.

     There are mother/child camps, grandfriend/child camps, and overnight camps beginning in grade 2 through high school ranging from theater camps, sports camps, crafts camps and adventure camps.
   All camps have a strong emphasis on Christian principles and values, and lots of time for traditional camp activities such as swimming, boating and singing by the campfire!
   REMEMBER MANY CAMPS FILL VERY FAST SO REGISTER TODAY!

What about money? Here's some important info for you:
1. The church will be paying the $50 registration fee for EVERY child from Peoples. You may register your camper now without payment, but be sure to put down Peoples UMC for your church. Peoples will pay the registration fees in one lump sum.
2. If you do not need assistance with the registration fee, feel free to make a donation of $50 or more to Peoples indicating it is for the Mechuwana Camp Fund, and placing in the offering during worship or mailing to Peoples UMC 310 Broadway South Portland, ME 04106 to the attention of Kathy Brann, Financial Secretary.
3. Families should pay as much as they can of the remaining camp fee. Mechuwana now takes all major credit cards. However, Mechuwana does not turn anyone away for lack of money. Peoples will pay as much as possible of the unpaid fees out of donations to the Mechuwana Fund. And Mechuwana also has scholarship funds to supply what families and churches are unable to provide.
4. If you would like donate toward the Mechuwana Fund, or fully or partially sponsor someone from Peoples to attend camp this summer, please contact Kathy Brann at 799.1981.

Peoples served at the 'Root Cellar' last Thursday, February 24. With prayerful thoughts of Chris Bowker, we had a full crew of helping hands. Ellen Dunn brought her music and message to the children, Hank, Isaac and Nathan Dunn, Marlene and Art Tordoff, Susan Angell, Kathy Brann, Merrill Kaiser, Kit and Randy Pike and Carol Bruneau all set up, cooked, washed dishes, served and cleaned up as well as took part in the message and music and ate with the children. This is always wonderful fellowship and a joyful mission in our own back yard. Thanks to all who made sweets too!

Peoples Plant Sale May 21

Peoples Church is holding its second plant sale on Saturday , May 21, 2011. Hours are 9:00 am until 12:00 noon, rain or shine.

Sponsored by Peoples Garden Club , this is a way to do something for Stewardship and to benefit world missions through Peoples mission shares.

We would like anyone who has perennials to share to pot them up, label them (including color if known) and bring them to the playground in back of the church on Friday the 20th. We can use extra pots, and shallow cardboard boxes to put plants in for the sale. It will be held in the driveway at the corner of Broadway and Mussey Street.

Partners in Ministry February 2011 Edition

Dear Partners in Ministry,

♦ TAKE JESUS WITH YOU. The East Longmeadow (MA) UMC gave all their members a homemade Jesus finger puppet last summer to take with them wherever they went. As one of the organizers of the project noted, this was "to ensure that we were aware that Jesus was with us as we vacationed and to take pictures to send back" to the church. A wonderful variety of pictures were received and displayed. There were folks with Jesus...at the beach....at the Grand Canyon...on a hike....fishing....gardening....at Disney...having fun at VacationBibleSchool...at the family reunion...in the car after a long, hot day driving....etc. It also created opportunities to share that Jesus is with us with strangers who noticed the Jesus finger puppets....and the pictures being taken. Kids and adults had a great time celebrating their faith that Jesus was with them. The theme carried over into Advent when the whole nativity story came alive in finger puppets. They even gave one to me....(Bishops really need to remember that Jesus is with them too!)
This is a creative, 21st century version of the old hymn (#536): "Take the name of Jesus with you, child of sorrow and of woe; it will joy and comfort give you, take it then where’re you go!" There are lots of great (and fun) ways to celebrate that Jesus is with us.....may He be with you always....everywhere.

♦ FLIPPING FOR MISSIONS. Just as the service was beginning last Sunday at the Hampton (NH) UMC, a man started down the center isle. I thought he was looking for a seat. Then he pulled out a frying pan and began to flip a huge pancake. He had everyone’s attention...flipping along....ooops he missed it....laughter....another try....he made it....applause. When he got to the front he announced it was ALL FOR MISSIONS! Shrove Tuesday they would have a pancake breakfast to raise funds to support the United Methodist Maine (Down East) Economic Ministry.
With such enthusiasm and creative presentation of the mission challenge, I realized why this church continues to be deeply engaged in mission...mission teams...working with the homeless....100% mission shares....Advance specials....Haiti.....peace with Justice.....mission studies....youth mission projects.....etc.
Is your church flipping for missions.....lifting up the great mission opportunities we United Methodists have here in our community, in New England, and around the world? Learn about all these opportunities on our neumc.org web site....and share the stories in ways that get people's attention....and involvement.

♦ SMALL GROUPS, SMALL GROUPS, SMALL GROUPS. The Leominster (MA) UMC is finding joy and growth (spiritually and numerically) in small groups. They now have nine small groups meeting weekly (mostly in homes) studying the "Essential 100" passages of the Bible: five each week, fifty from the Old Testament, fifty from the New Testament. It is enriching the participants, the congregation and drawing new people (who are more likely to come to your home....it's easier to get to know each other in a small group....and don't forget the Methodist cookies....or celery). The pastor may lead one or two groups, but he or she should really equip the laity to lead most of them.....a great way to use lay speakers. Think creatively about where and when to have small groups. Here's a list of places small groups were started by churches I served: in the mill, at an automobile dealer, in the jail, after-school "club" at the high school, at the Y, in senior citizen apartment building, a senior center, a youth gym, in restaurants over breakfast or lunch, at the university, in a homeless shelter, in a downtown office building, in "the projects," at a city park (for teens hanging out in the summer), in neighborhood homes all over the community. You can add to the list of possibilities.....wherever there are people.
Small groups were the secret of John Wesley's method for Methodists. A recent study of our most vital United Methodist Churches says small groups are a key to their vitality. Lent would be a great time to start new groups...during the week....or as new Sunday School classes for adults or young adults. Or, as I suggested around Christmas, plan new small groups to meet after Easter to meet the needs of the "seekers" or inactive members who will show up at Easter....invite them to keep coming....at least for a new small group. There are resources available through our Conference resource/media center....often with DVDs to help "lead" the small group.
Try it....and let me know how it goes....what good resources you discovered....where and when you had it??? THINK SMALL.....GROUP.

♦ PPP. During worship at the North Charlestown (NH) UMC, people and the pastor lifted up names of shut-ins or folks in the community who were in need. Then the pastor called the congregation to the three P's: Prayer, Phone, Postcard. In other words, what will we do to connect, build relationship with these people? I would add a fourth P: "Pop in and visit." Clearly this church (founded in 1811) is still practicing and growing through building relationships with their neighbors.
I remember visiting another United Methodist church where the pastor asked people in the congregation to raise their hands if they would be willing to call or visit that week the person whose name was being lifted up for prayer. The list was long. There were about 1,000 in attendance. It was inspiring to see the number of people who committed themselves to "follow up" with a caring PPP or P with at least one person on the list. It could happen in your church too.

♦ SIT TOGETHER MORE. On Jan. 23, the Sunday before President Obama's State of the Union Address, I was preaching in Springfield, VT. The service was at 9:30 a.m., it was 5 degrees below zero, and there was the usual snow and ice to contend with (after all "it's winter in New England"....I know, I've shoveled snow off my roof, too). I arrived at the church about a half an hour early and was followed into the building by an older gentleman who was all bundled up. (I later found out that he is 93 years old....I am so inspired by the "senior saints" in our churches.) "You must be the Bishop," he said. (He could probably tell by my "frozen" expression that I was "from away.") Without skipping a beat he went on, "Do you think they'll sit together?" He could tell that I didn't know what he was talking about...and I didn't. "Sit together....you know the Congress!" "Oh, yes." I blurted, finally waking up and warming up enough to respond. Then with a quiet wisdom, he added, "I think we need to sit together more." How true.
People started arriving for worship...and sitting together. Young and old, the more affluent and the less, singles and couples, the robust and the frail, those who sang and those who just listened, all of our differences gathered together in one place...for the one purpose to worship the one God. We talked about the two teenagers, Leah, 16, and Connor, 15, who had committed suicide earlier that week in the area....we asked questions together...sought a Word from the Lord together....prayed for them...and us. During joys and concerns there was mention of cancer and unemployment and birthdays and hospitalizations and world peace and silent thoughts too deep or private for words. But there we sat together. A young doctor from Virginia had "come home" to check on his mother and her house. He stood, and with a voice full of emotion thanked the congregation for all of their caring and support.....for being the church.....sitting and praying and serving and hoping and believing together.
I give great thanks to God for all of our congregations that gather, as Springfield does, as the Body of Christ, in all of our diversity, One. Through Christ, God has made us partners in this ministry. May we all learn "to sit together more" and discover in each other the gifts of this partnership....even when it’s five below zero.

PandaMania Camp July 11-15

New Nursery Staff at Peoples!

Peoples has hired two workers to share the nursery staff position. We praise God for this answer to prayer!

Please welcome Adrienne Bowden as the lead nursery staff working three Sundays/month, and Margaret Robinson as the assistant nursery staff working one Sunday month. Adrienne will also be scheduling Peoples volunteers each week beginning soon for March through May. If you would be willing to join the volunteer list to serve once every three months, please contact Adrienne.

Adrienne lives within walking distance to Peoples with her partner Jim and four children ranging in ages 2-12. She works full time at the Building Blocks Daycare at Thornton Heights United Methodist Church.

Margaret Robinson who has attended Peoples for several years now, is the daughter of Catherine Whittemore and is a Senior in High School. Margaret hopes to attend USM next year, majoring in sign language.

Sunday School Family Pizza Gathering March 3

On March 3 at 5:30pm, parents, children, Sunday School teachers and other members are invited to gather for pizza followed by a Bible discussion led by Pastor Jamie on the upcoming Sunday School Unit, "Out of Egypt." This unit will be covering the story of Exodus and how God freed his people from slavery in Egypt. After pizza the kids will watch a movie while the adults have some meaningful discussion around the topic we'll be teaching. Andy will then describe the centers for the unit and answer any questions about the logistics of teaching. No More Print Newsletter

The pastors decided together with Church Council on February 8 to discontinue the print version of the Peoples Newsletter. All event info will continue to be posted here on the blog and in the worship bulletin, and the most important events highlighted on facebook along with other articles and photos. If we receive enough feedback to bring back the print version we will be looking for lay volunteers to take on this task. See you online!

New Peoples Youth Group, with a Purpose!

The bad news is the Regional Jr & Sr. High Youth Group has been discontinued, but the good news is that Peoples Church alone has enough youth to begin our own youth group. All youth are invited to join us for dinner on February 13 at 5:30pm at Peoples. And bring a friend!
The Peoples Youth Group will be focusing on missions such as world hunger and habitat for humanity with fun and meaningful activities for youth to engage these issues. We hope you will encourage your tweens and teens to join up!

Summer Mission Trip: Going Back to Wilmington!

The Peoples Mission Team has sensed God’s call to return to Urban Promise in Wilmington, DE this summer, and will be traveling June 25-July 2. Ages 11+ are invited to join the team, and we will be taking registrations with $50 deposit through May 31. The next team meeting will take place March 6 after worship. What is Lent?

Lent begins on March 9, Ash Wednesday. "Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a time to prepare for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism (which would take place on Easter). By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days. Because Sunday is the day of the Resurrection, we skip over Sundays when we calculate the length of Lent. Therefore, in the Western Church, Lent always begins on Ash Wednesday, the seventh Wednesday before Easter." (quoted from http://www.kencollins.com/texts/Lent.pdf where you can read in more detail)

Jesus spent forty days in the desert preparing for his ministry. He was "tested" during this time, approached by demons offering him the opportunity to be the wrong kind of messiah. He rejected each possibility, and simply did the will of the Father, which also foreshadowed his final testing and defeat of evil through the cross and resurrection.

Jesus fasted during these forty days, and one of his temptations was to use his power to assuage his hunger rather than to depend on God. During Lent, we likewise can experience a deeper dependence on God through fasting. Some fast from food once a week during Lent. Others give up something during the entire forty days of Lent, such as chocolate or meat, TV or Internet or unnecessary purchases.

In depriving ourselves of some pleasure for a period, we discover what of the world enslaves us and we learn to trust and depend on God as we battle each temptation. As we experience the pangs of hunger or desire, we are reminded to pray. Fasting even seems to sharpen our senses and open our eyes to those in need around us. And fasting frees up time we would have spent eating, watching TV, on the internet, or shopping to use in service of others, and frees up financial resources that can be given to the needy.

It may be most helpful then to consider not just what to "give up for Lent," but what to "take on during Lent." How is God calling us to love the Lord with more of our heart, mind, soul and strength? How is God calling us to love and serve others more faithfully? And likewise, what might God be calling us to give up to enable us to do so? May we together respond to God's call to deeper our discipleship this holy Lenten season.

During the 40 Days of Lent leading up to Easter, Peoples will be hosting several opportunities to grow in our faith. These include:

Wednesday Worship at 7pm, hosted by different United Methodist Churches in our area each week. The series begins on Ash Wednesday, March 9 at Cape Elizabeth UMC with Pastor Jamie preaching.
Taize Prayer and Meditation services, Sundays 7pm during Lent, beginning March 13 through April 17.
Easter Experience Small Group study, which was used during Lent last year by the Tuesday morning Bible Study and highly recommended. We will be looking for homes and leaders shortly!
Bake Sales During Lent: Sundays after worship there will be different types of food and baked goods for sale to benefit different ministries of the church.

We hope you will join together as we grow closer to our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Swap Shop at Our Sister Church

The Swap Shop will next be meeting March 5, 9am-3pm. This is a new ministry from our sister church, Elm Street UMC. They are looking for donations especially boys wear, men’s wear and small women’s sizes. This would also be a great opportunity for volunteers from Peoples to volunteer.
