March Senior Community Luncheon

Senior Community Luncheon: Not Cancelled but Delayed
Northeaster results
Becky, Marlene and Carol set the tables
After not having a Luncheon in the months of January and February because of the threat of bad weather the March luncheon scheduled for March 8 was struck by the second Northeaster in a week and one half. All the calls to invitees had been made and the food had been purchased and over 65 people were to be in attendance. Seeing the necessity of moving the time to another date all of the callers again called all of their people and said that we would have this time on Friday, March 9 at the same time. Not all of the invitees or all of the workers could make it, but over 45 people showed up to chat, enjoy a program and have a hearty meal prepared by Chef Brad.

Ashley Armstrong SPFD
The program was titled “Take a Stand to Prevent Falls” given by Ashley Armstrong of the South Portland Fire Department. Ms. Armstrong had paper copies of a program prepared by the American Occupational Therapy Association and the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy to share with the attendees as she talked everyone through the pages. All of the audience was very attentive and found the presentation meaningful and useful. Many questions were asked before the speaker left and answered. We thank her for being a part of this day’s festivities.

The meal prepared by our own master chef Brad, consisted of Corned Beef, potato, carrots and cabbage. Irish soda bread was available on the tables as soon as people started arriving. Short- bread type cookies with a green icing shamrock on each were served as a dessert.

An Irish theme is appropriate
While Ellis Hall is set up for folks to play games as early as 10:30 AM no one was taking advantage of that activity on this occasion.
We thank Dick Miller for playing Irish songs on his keyboard before the program began.
Certainly the organizing committee headed by Brad Morrison and Marlene Tordoff along with the callers, servers and those who helped set up and take down tables and chairs are to be commended for their efforts. Dick Small is also to be thanked for getting the speaker. We also thank those who responded to the invitation for this monthly event for coming to Ellis Hall the day after a major storm. If I have forgotten to include any one I am sorry.

It is truly what the Lord wants us to do to extend his love through us to the community of elders in our community.
